What is IB Computer Science?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Computer Science course is a challenging, pre-university program that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of computer science. This course is part of the IB Diploma Programme and is recognized globally for its high academic standards. The IB Computer Science curriculum includes:

  • Programming: Developing proficiency in programming languages such as Java or Python.
  • System Fundamentals: Understanding computer hardware, software, and networking principles.
  • Data Structures and Algorithms: Learning about various data structures, algorithm design, and analysis.
  • Web Science: Exploring web technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and server-side scripting.
  • Modeling and Simulation: Using computational models to solve real-world problems.
  • Abstract Data Structures: Studying advanced data structures and their applications.
  • Computational Thinking: Developing problem-solving skills through algorithmic thinking and logical reasoning.

IB Computer Science SL vs. HL

The IB Computer Science course is offered at two levels: Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). Here are the key differences:

  • Depth and Breadth of Content: HL students cover more topics in greater depth compared to SL students. HL includes additional content such as resource management, control, and computational thinking.
  • Assessment: Both SL and HL students complete internal assessments and external examinations. However, HL exams are more extensive and cover a wider range of material.
  • Time Commitment: HL requires more instructional hours than SL. Typically, HL courses are 240 hours of teaching compared to 150 hours for SL.
  • Project Complexity: The internal assessment project for HL students is more complex and requires a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
